EV Aristocrats

It's not everyday that you come by a pair of mint Electrovoice 12TRX drivers. These were the top end of EV's 12" series. While lesser SP12 and 12TRXB drivers are fairly common, the 12TRX are hard to come by, especially in pairs.

One of the most popular cabinet designs for the entire 12" EV line was the 'Aristocrat'. Originally a Klipsch design, EV sold it in a number of finishes, mainly in kit form. Construction and materials were the standard faire for the day - heavy particle board and cheap plywood. The design also featured brass accents on the grill, not uncommon for speakers of that period.

EV used this design in their 1, 2, and 3-way configurations. To accommodate for this, the front panel is littered with ports, slots, and screw holes. The 12TRX has the midrange and tweeter suspended in the center of the speaker, making the extra ports unnecessary.

Internal dampening came from old crepe insulation along the inside of the rear baffle. The robust EV X31 crossover mounts onto the side wall, across from the tweeter pad.

I've attached some original ads for the design. In the next post, I'll go over the planned improvements and materials considerations.
