Finished Product

Some pictures of the final product, with the 12TRX drivers in full view.

Tung oil was applied as the final finish. This finish is applied slowly with many coats, and results in a smooth, natural gloss - characteristic of hand-rubbed finishes. The attached photos were taken at various numbers of coats.

With the construction complete, the finishing began with a honey gel stain to warm up the maple and highlight the natural grain and colors of the woods. The attached photos show the finish after one coat of stain.

The rear edges were finished with padauk, borrowing the reddish tones of the cherry veneer.

The front trim pieces were made with maple and padauk. For those unfamiliar, padauk is an African hardwood with a vibrant red color that darkens with age, making it an excellent choice for inlays and accents. The photos show the sandwich process, along with the appropriate milling and installation of the trim.

Maple veneer was used for the tops and sides, cherry on the front and rear baffle.

These photos show the initial cabinet construction from 3/4" standard MDF - a much more denser, inert material than the original kits used. Due to the difference in material thicknesses, the original interior dimensions were used, keeping the cabinet volume constant. PVA glue was used for all joints, followed by elastomeric caulking to further seal the joints. The result is a rigid, nail-free, and deceptively heavy enclosure.
